What is DiscoverBees all about?

We started DiscoverBees with the intention of bringing fun, engaging, and educational crafts to kids from all walks of life. It seems that children are becoming more and more immersed in the world of electronics, and don't have as much opportunity to be hands-on and know the great feeling that comes with making things by hand. We know it's not possible for every family to attend workshops, and we didn't want to limit the reach our crafts could have by offering only to families in our local area.

Hence, the mail-order craft service!

By ordering either a yearly subscription or individually, a package containing multiple themed crafts (materials will all be included!) will be delivered straight to your door -- so your child will have a craft to engage them each week for a month! We'll also include fun poems, recipes, and a reading list, providing lots of opportunities for your child to explore many different aspects of the theme.

About Sonja

Hello there!

 I am a mother of three, and over the years I've discovered a love of all types of crafting -- crocheting, needlepoint, cross-stitch, paper crafts, and scrapbooking. I'm an avid reader, and am always keeping up to date on new children's lit. It has always been my ambition to work with children, so I've been an Educational Assistant, working with kids with a wide variety of learning disabilities, as well as working with an early literacy intervention program called Strong Start. Currently, I am an Intensive Behaviour Intervention therapist, focusing on children with Autism. Working with these kids has opened up a whole new world of learning and teaching styles for me, as I've come to learn about the different ways these children perceive the world around them. I am a strong advocate of learning through play, and integrating reading into activities wherever possible. 

I'm also the proud owner of a whippet named Pip, and a puggle named Moxxi. Definitely an odd pair, but they're great and brings tons of fun and energy to our home!

About Joy

Welcome! 

I'm Joy, and I've had the privilege of working for local children's theatre company actOUT for the last seven-odd years (since I was pretty much a kid myself) in a variety of different roles, including but not limited to director, stage manager, class instructor, camp counsellor, poster designer, and assistant-to-whoever-might-need-me. Doing this kind of work, I get to meet all sorts of kids from all walks of life, and it's really instilled in me a passion to inspire imagination and creativity in young people. In 2012 I was honoured by being included in my city's 40 Under 40 list. I am a creative-junkie, and I like to think of myself as a dabbler. That is, when I see a creative activity that looks interesting to me, I'll try it, and usually I'll love it! I love painting, drawing, writing, scrapbooking, crocheting, photography, and anything else I can get my hands on! Some of my favourite memories are of my mom (hello up there, Mother dearest!) reading books to me, and so as you can imagine, I absolutely devour books. I especially love the fantastic fiction that's being written for the 9-12 year-old group right now.
